What Do Missed Calls Cost Your Business?
This calculator turns the calls your business does not answer into lost revenue per month and per year. Enter the calls that go unanswered, the share of callers who never call back, how many are prospects, what a new customer is worth and your close rate; the formula is shown with your numbers, and every result has a shareable link.
01 Calculator

Five figures from your call log and your sales records. Change any of them and the result follows.
02 Your result
What the missed calls are costing you
Fill in the five figures above and press Calculate to see your lost revenue per month and per year.
- Lost revenue per month
- First-year value of the customers you would have won.
- Lost revenue per year
- 52 weeks of the days you entered.
- Callers lost per month
- Missed callers who never call back.
- Callers lost per year
- Prospects lost per month
- Lost callers who were new business.
- Customers lost per year
- Prospects you would have closed.
Conservative by design: only first-year value counts, and callers who do call back are not counted as lost. The calculation is shown below with your numbers in it.
03 How it is calculated
How is the missed-call cost calculated?
Five multiplications, nothing hidden. With your numbers in it:
- Callers lost per day missed calls per day x percent who never call back
- Prospects lost per day callers lost x share who are prospects
- Customers lost per day prospects lost x close rate
- Lost revenue per year customers lost per day x days per week x 52 weeks x first-year value
- Lost revenue per month lost revenue per year / 12
Assumptions
- Only the first year of a new customer counts. Repeat business, service contracts and referrals are left out, so the result understates the loss.
- A caller who does call back later is not counted as lost, even though they waited and may have tried a competitor in between.
- A year is 52 weeks of the days you take calls, and a month is that year divided by 12.
- The share of callers who never call back has no default. The figures quoted around the web trace back to vendor marketing, not to a study we could fetch and verify, and this site prints no number it cannot source. Measure your own: for one week, count the calls you missed, then the voicemails and later call-backs from the same numbers.

This calculator relies on no outside statistics. Every figure is one you entered; the only constants are the calendar (52 weeks and 12 months in a year). For the figures behind our other tools, see the VoIP bandwidth calculator and the call-recording notice generator.

Voicemail, an answering service or an AI voice agent?
Three ways to stop losing the calls, compared in words rather than prices. Each is right for someone.
| Consideration | Voicemail | Answering service | AI voice agent (Donya) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Answers after hours and on weekends | No. Callers leave a message or hang up. | Yes, within the hours you pay for. | Yes, around the clock. |
| Caller speaks to someone right away | No. | Yes, a receptionist working from a script. | Yes, an assistant trained on your business. |
| Books appointments or takes orders | No. | Sometimes, if the script and the tools allow it. | Yes, into your calendar and CRM. |
| Qualifies callers and routes urgent calls | No. | Partly, usually by taking a message. | Yes, by the rules you set. |
| How the cost behaves | Nothing to pay, but the calls above are lost. | Grows with the minutes answered. | Mostly flat; quoted after a 15-minute discovery call. |
| Where it falls short | Many callers will not leave a message. | Message-taking only, and callers can tell. | Needs setup and tuning by a team that knows your calls. |
Donya is the AI voice agent Telxpress builds and runs for Orange County businesses: it answers around the clock, qualifies the caller, books the appointment and routes the urgent calls to a person, and our Irvine team sets it up on your existing phone system. See how Donya handles a call, or start with the phone system itself.

06 Questions
Questions about the missed-call calculator
Why is there no default for the share of callers who never call back?
Because we could not find a source worth citing. The percentages repeated across the web trace back to vendor marketing, not to a study we could read, and this site prints no number it cannot source. Measure your own instead: for one week, count the calls you missed, then count the voicemails and later call-backs from those numbers.
Where do I find how many calls go unanswered?
Your phone system already knows. Phone systems from Nextiva, Avaya and Yeastar keep call logs and reports that show unanswered, abandoned and voicemail calls by day and by hour; look for a missed-calls or abandoned-calls report. If you only have a landline, keep a tally sheet by the phone for a week and count the voicemails each morning.
Does the calculator include repeat business or lifetime value?
No. It counts only the first-year value you enter for a new customer, so the result is deliberately conservative. Repeat purchases, service contracts and referrals from a customer you never won are all left out. If you know your customers stay for years, the real cost of a missed call is higher than the figure shown here.
Is an AI voice agent the only way to stop missing calls?
No, and it is not always the first step. Many businesses recover calls by fixing ring groups, adding a call queue with an honest wait message, routing after-hours calls to a mobile or using an answering service. Donya makes sense when calls arrive around the clock, need qualifying or booking, and nobody can be there.
