Auto-framing camera
An auto-framing camera is a meeting-room camera that uses AI to detect the people present and zoom, pan and crop, so remote participants see faces clearly instead of a wide shot of an empty table.
01 In depth
What it is, why it matters and what to ask a vendor
Auto-framing cameras track the room with on-device processing. Modes vary by manufacturer: group framing keeps everyone present in view, speaker tracking zooms to whoever is talking, and some systems compose a gallery of individual faces so a full room appears as separate tiles. Multi-camera rooms switch between angles automatically.
For a growing business the benefit is equity between the room and remote participants: people on the far end can read expressions and follow who is speaking, which keeps hybrid meetings productive. It also removes the need for anyone in the room to operate the camera, which in practice nobody does.
Ask an integrator which framing modes the camera supports and how fast it reacts, how it behaves when people stand or move to a whiteboard, whether it works natively with your room platform (Teams Rooms or Zoom Rooms), how it is mounted relative to the display, and whether it can be disabled for privacy. Ask to see it in a room the size of yours, with people moving.
