01 In depth

What it is, why it matters and what to ask a vendor

A digital signage system has three parts: commercial displays rated for long daily use, a media player or built-in system on each screen, and content management software that schedules what plays where. Content can be slides and video, web pages, live dashboards, calendars, or data pulled from your systems, such as today's appointments or a queue status.

For a growing business signage replaces printed posters that go stale and lets one person update every location at once. In a dealership it shows service specials and wait times; in a clinic it shares health information and shortens perceived waiting; in an office it welcomes visitors and shows room schedules. It also uses the same network, cabling and sometimes the same PoE as everything else.

Ask an integrator about display brightness for the location (windows and sunlight matter), the warranty and rated hours, how content is scheduled and by whom, whether the software is a subscription, how the players are secured on the network, and how screens are monitored so a blank display is noticed before a customer sees it.
