Agentic AI

Agentic AI describes AI systems that can take actions to complete a goal, such as booking an appointment, updating a CRM record or sending a follow-up, rather than only answering questions.

01 In depth

What it is, why it matters and what to ask a vendor

A chat assistant produces text; an agentic system also acts. Given a goal, it plans steps, calls tools and systems (calendars, CRMs, phone systems, payment links), checks results and continues until the task is done or it needs a person. An AI voice agent that books the appointment it just discussed is agentic; one that only reads out your hours is not.

For a growing business the appeal is finished work rather than drafts. The risk is the same thing: an agent with write access to your systems can make real mistakes at scale. Permissions, limits and review steps matter more than the model's intelligence, and so does a clear record of every action taken.

Ask a vendor exactly which actions the agent can take, which require a human approval, how permissions are scoped per system, how every action is logged, how you pause or roll it back, and what happens when a tool fails mid-task. Start with narrow, reversible actions and widen them as the record proves trustworthy.
