01 In depth

What it is, why it matters and what to ask a vendor

IVR is the broader category that an auto attendant belongs to. Where an auto attendant mostly routes, an IVR can also collect an account number, read back a balance, take a payment or confirm an appointment. Traditional IVRs follow a fixed script; a conversational IVR or AI voice agent lets the caller speak naturally.

Growing businesses meet IVR in two places: as a feature of their own phone system, and as the thing their customers complain about. A well designed IVR removes repetitive calls from the team; a badly designed one hides the exit and drives callers to hang up or to a competitor.

Ask a vendor whether the IVR understands natural speech or only keypad input, how it integrates with your CRM or scheduling system, how callers reach a person, what the reports show about where callers abandon, and how payment steps are kept out of recordings if cards are taken by phone.
