01 In depth

What it is, why it matters and what to ask a vendor

Fixed wireless access uses licensed or unlicensed radio spectrum, or a cellular network, to deliver internet without a cable to the building. Installation is usually faster than fiber construction, and because the path does not share the trench or the street cabinet with your wired service, it fails for different reasons, which is exactly what you want in a backup.

For a growing business it solves two problems: a new or temporary location that cannot wait months for fiber, and a second connection for failover and SD-WAN that is not just another cable from the same provider. Performance varies with line of sight, weather and shared capacity, so it should be measured, not assumed.

Ask a provider for guaranteed speeds and latency rather than best-effort figures, what happens in heavy rain, whether the service is dedicated or shared, how quickly it can be installed, and whether the antenna placement needs landlord approval. Ask whether they offer it bundled with SD-WAN so failover is automatic. Telxpress sources fixed wireless through carrier partners such as DISH and TPx.
