AI receptionist
An AI receptionist is an AI voice agent configured for front-desk work: greeting callers, answering routine questions, routing calls to the right person and scheduling, so staff handle visitors and exceptions.
01 In depth
What it is, why it matters and what to ask a vendor
An AI receptionist is a role, not a different technology. It is a voice agent given the scripts, hours, directory and calendar access a front desk uses. It greets callers by business name, answers the questions that interrupt the desk all day, books and reschedules, and routes anything unusual to a person.
Small and growing businesses rarely lose the receptionist when they add one. The AI takes the volume: simultaneous calls, lunch hours, evenings and weekends. The person keeps visitors, judgment calls and relationships, and usually becomes the owner of the AI's scripts, deciding what it may say and when it must hand off.
Ask how the handoff works when the desk is staffed, how the agent behaves when nobody picks up, whether it can see the real calendar, and how quickly a script change goes live. Ask for a transcript review process, because the first weeks of transcripts are where the best improvements come from.
