01 In depth

## What it is, why it matters and *what to ask a vendor*

Instead of running a cable from each device to each piece of equipment as needs arise, structured cabling follows standards such as ANSI/TIA-568: horizontal cables from labeled wall outlets to patch panels in a telecom room, backbone fiber between rooms and floors, and documented terminations tested to the category they claim. Done well, it outlives several generations of equipment.

For a growing business the cabling is the part of the network that is most expensive to redo and most often blamed for problems it did not cause. Phones, Wi-Fi access points, cameras and meeting rooms all depend on it, and PoE devices depend on its quality to receive clean power. New builds, expansions and office moves are the moments to get it right.

Ask a cabling contractor which category they will install and why, whether every link is certified with a tester and the reports delivered, how cables and panels are labeled, how the pathways handle future additions, and whether the design includes the audio visual and camera runs. Ask for a drawing you can hand to the next contractor.

### [Cat6 vs Cat6A](https://telxpress.com/glossary/cat6-vs-cat6a/)
Cat6 vs Cat6A is the choice between two grades of twisted-pair copper cabling; Category 6A supports higher-speed Ethernet over the full standard distance and resists interference better, at higher cost and a thicker cable.

### [PoE (Power over Ethernet)](https://telxpress.com/glossary/poe/)
Power over Ethernet (PoE) delivers power to devices such as phones, Wi-Fi access points, cameras and room controllers through the same network cable that carries their data, so no outlet is needed at the device.

### [Packet loss](https://telxpress.com/glossary/packet-loss/)
Packet loss is the share of packets that never reach their destination; on a voice or video call even a small amount causes dropped words, frozen video and a line that seems to cut out.

### [Wi-Fi 6, 6E and 7](https://telxpress.com/glossary/wi-fi-6-6e-7/)
Wi-Fi 6, 6E and 7 are the most recent generations of wireless networking; each handles more devices in a crowded office with less delay, and 6E and 7 add the less congested 6 GHz band.
