# Packet loss

**Packet loss** is the share of packets that never reach their destination; on a voice or video call even a small amount causes dropped words, frozen video and a line that seems to cut out.

## What it is, why it matters and *what to ask a vendor*

Web pages and email hide packet loss by resending; real-time calls cannot wait, so a lost packet is a missing slice of sound. Loss comes from congested links that discard packets, faulty cabling and connectors, duplex mismatches, interference on Wi-Fi, and overloaded firewalls. Call endpoints report it through RTCP (RFC 3550), which is where provider dashboards get their per-call statistics.

For a growing business packet loss is the fault that is hardest to see and easiest to misattribute. A single damaged patch cord or a switch port negotiating badly can degrade every call that crosses it while every speed test looks fine. Cameras and backups sharing the same uplink add loss exactly when the office is busiest.

Ask your network partner to test the cabling and switch ports that carry phones and meeting rooms, to look at per-call statistics from the phone platform rather than one speed test, and to confirm QoS on the uplink. Ask your internet provider what loss their service guarantees and how they measure it.

Jitter is the variation in the time it takes voice or video packets to arrive; when it is high, a call sounds choppy or robotic because the receiving device cannot smooth the uneven stream.

### [Latency](https://telxpress.com/glossary/latency/)
Latency is the time a packet takes to travel from one end of a connection to the other; on a phone or video call, high latency makes people talk over each other and pause awkwardly.

### [QoS (quality of service)](https://telxpress.com/glossary/qos/)
Quality of service (QoS) is the network configuration that identifies time-sensitive traffic such as voice and video and gives it priority over downloads and backups, so calls stay clear when the network is busy.
