# Jitter

**Jitter** is the variation in the time it takes voice or video packets to arrive; when it is high, a call sounds choppy or robotic because the receiving device cannot smooth the uneven stream.

## What it is, why it matters and *what to ask a vendor*

Packets in a call should arrive at steady intervals. Congested links, Wi-Fi retries and overloaded devices make them bunch up and spread out instead. Phones and apps hide a little of this with a jitter buffer that briefly holds packets to even them out, but a large buffer adds delay and a small one drops packets, so the cure for serious jitter is the network, not the buffer.

For a growing business jitter is usually the first sign that the network has outgrown its design: more people on the same Wi-Fi, a switch that is now also carrying cameras and backups, or an internet uplink that is saturated at busy hours. Because it comes and goes, it is often dismissed until customers mention it.

Ask your network partner to measure jitter, latency and packet loss over a working week rather than in one test, to show where on the path the variation appears, and whether QoS is prioritizing voice on the congested links. Ask your phone or meeting provider what jitter their service tolerates and what their dashboards report per call.

### [Latency](https://telxpress.com/glossary/latency/)
Latency is the time a packet takes to travel from one end of a connection to the other; on a phone or video call, high latency makes people talk over each other and pause awkwardly.
- Network
### [Packet loss](https://telxpress.com/glossary/packet-loss/)
Packet loss is the share of packets that never reach their destination; on a voice or video call even a small amount causes dropped words, frozen video and a line that seems to cut out.

### [QoS (quality of service)](https://telxpress.com/glossary/qos/)
Quality of service (QoS) is the network configuration that identifies time-sensitive traffic such as voice and video and gives it priority over downloads and backups, so calls stay clear when the network is busy.
- Phones
### [VoIP](https://telxpress.com/glossary/voip/)
VoIP (voice over internet protocol) carries phone calls as data over an internet or private IP network instead of traditional copper phone lines; cloud phone systems, UCaaS and SIP trunks are all built on it.
